Implement Enhanced Conversions for Leads

Enhanced conversions for leads enables you to improve the accuracy of your offline conversion measurement by uploading click conversions that contain hashed user identifiers and some optional additional details that help Google Ads tie the conversion to the ad that drove the lead.

Make sure to review the Getting Started guide and implement the prerequisites for enhanced conversions for leads before proceeding with implementation.

You can upload enhanced conversions for leads through the Google Ads UI, as described in the Help Center, or through the Google Ads API, as described in this guide.

Design your integration

Usage flow

Here is the overall flow for uploading enhanced conversions for leads in the Google Ads API.

  1. Make sure you've implemented the prerequisites, which include the following:

    1. Enable conversion tracking.

    2. Accept the customer data terms.

    3. Configure tagging on your website lead forms.

    See Implement the prerequisites for detailed guidance.

  2. Normalize and hash the lead data. This might include email address and phone number.

  3. Put the normalized and hashed lead data into ClickConversion objects. For each ClickConversion:

    1. Populate user_identifiers with the normalized and hashed lead data. If you have multiple user identifiers available, create a separate UserIdentifier for each one, up to five identifiers.

    2. (Optional) Populate gclid for the most accurate measurement.

    3. Starting with version v15 of the Google Ads API, you should populate the consent field of the ClickConversion object.

    4. Set conversion_action to the resource name of a ConversionAction with a type of UPLOAD_CLICKS. This should be the resource name of the ConversionAction you created when you implemented the prerequisites.

  4. Upload ClickConversion creation operations to the ConversionUploadService, setting partial_failure to true.

  5. Review your uploads.

Best practices

Keep the following best practices in mind when implementing enhanced conversions for leads.

Include multiple identifiers if you have them

If you have the gclid for a conversion, we recommend sending it in addition to the user_identifiers for improved performance. Further, if you have more than one UserIdentifier for the conversion, including multiple can improve the likelihood of a match. Include all identifiers on the same ClickConversion.

Review partial failure errors when setting up your integration

When you're first setting up your enhanced conversions for leads integration, review and address any partial errors in the partial_failure_error field of the response. If there are issues in your setup, you will need to inspect this field to investigate and address them. For more details and examples around partial failure error handling, visit the dedicated partial failure guide.

As you review partial failure errors, consult the common errors table in the troubleshooting guide. Once you've resolved any issues that surfaced in partial failure errors and your integration is complete, switch to using offline data diagnostics to regularly review the health of your conversions.

Batch multiple conversions in a single request

If you have multiple conversions to upload, batch the operations into one UploadClickConversionsRequest, rather than sending an upload request per conversion.

Check the quota guide for limits on the number of conversions per request.

If you want offline data diagnostics to group a set of requests under the same logical job, set the job_id of all the requests to the same value. This can be useful if you have a single job or process that uploads a large number of conversions using multiple requests. If you set the job_id on each of those requests to the same value, then you can retrieve a single entry for the job from job_summaries. If instead you let the Google Ads API assign a system-generated value to the job_id of each request, the job_summaries contains a separate entry for each request, which could make analyzing the overall health of your job more challenging.

Upload all available offline conversion events

To ensure full and accurate conversion reporting, upload all available offline conversion events, including those that might not have come from Google Ads.

Uploading all conversion events leads to CLICK_NOT_FOUND errors for any events that are not from Google Ads. Since these errors are expected when uploading all conversion events, UploadClickConversionsRequest has a debug_enabled field.

  • If debug_enabled is false or is not set, the Google Ads API only performs basic input validation, skips subsequent upload checks, and returns success even if no click is found for the provided user_identifiers.

    This is the default.

  • If debug_enabled is true, the Google Ads API performs all validations and returns a CLICK_NOT_FOUND error for any ClickConversion where there is no Google Ads conversion for the provided user_identifiers.

During development and testing, you can set debug_enabled to true to help identify issues. For example, if you have a set of conversions and user_identifiers that you know are from Google Ads conversions, you can use the true setting to validate that those uploads do not result in a CLICK_NOT_FOUND error. However, when you proceed past development and testing, we recommend setting debug_enabled to false to avoid excessive errors.

Don't use external attribution data

Do not set external_attribution_data on the ClickConversion or specify a conversion_action that uses an external attribution model. Google Ads does not support externally attributed conversions for uploads using identifiers.

Prepare data for upload

For privacy concerns, email addresses and phone numbers must be hashed using the SHA-256 algorithm before being uploaded. In order to standardize the hash results, prior to hashing one of these values you must:

  • Remove leading/trailing whitespaces.
  • Convert the text to lowercase.
  • Format phone numbers according to the E164 standard.
  • Remove all periods (.) that precede the domain name in gmail.com and googlemail.com email addresses.

Upload enhanced conversions

The following snippets demonstrate how to construct a conversion upload that contains identifiers for email address and phone number, with standardization and hashing applied as required. As a best practice, include gclid and order_id on the conversion if they're available.

Add user identifiers to the ClickConversion

Java

// Creates an empty builder for constructing the click conversion.
ClickConversion.Builder clickConversionBuilder = ClickConversion.newBuilder();

// Extracts user email and phone from the raw data, normalizes and hashes it, then wraps it in
// UserIdentifier objects.
// Creates a separate UserIdentifier object for each. The data in this example is hardcoded, but
// in your application you might read the raw data from an input file.

// IMPORTANT: Since the identifier attribute of UserIdentifier
// (https://developers.google.com/google-ads/api/reference/rpc/latest/UserIdentifier) is a
// oneof
// (https://protobuf.dev/programming-guides/proto3/#oneof-features), you must set only ONE of
// hashedEmail, hashedPhoneNumber, mobileId, thirdPartyUserId, or addressInfo. Setting more
// than one of these attributes on the same UserIdentifier will clear all the other members
// of the oneof. For example, the following code is INCORRECT and will result in a
// UserIdentifier with ONLY a hashedPhoneNumber.
//
// UserIdentifier incorrectlyPopulatedUserIdentifier =
//     UserIdentifier.newBuilder()
//         .setHashedEmail("...")
//         .setHashedPhoneNumber("...")
//         .build();

Map<String, String> rawRecord =
    ImmutableMap.<String, String>builder()

        .put("phone", "+1 800 5550102")
        // This example lets you input conversion details as arguments, but in reality you might
        // store this data alongside other user data, so we include it in this sample user
        // record.

# Extract user email and phone from the raw data, normalize and hash it,
# then wrap it in UserIdentifier objects. Create a separate UserIdentifier
# object for each.
# The data in this example is hardcoded, but in your application
# you might read the raw data from an input file.
#
# IMPORTANT: Since the identifier attribute of UserIdentifier
# (https://developers.google.com/google-ads/api/reference/rpc/latest/UserIdentifier)
# is a oneof
# (https://protobuf.dev/programming-guides/proto3/#oneof-features), you must set
# only ONE of hashed_email, hashed_phone_number, mobile_id, third_party_user_id,
# or address-info. Setting more than one of these attributes on the same UserIdentifier
# will clear all the other members of the oneof. For example, the following code is
# INCORRECT and will result in a UserIdentifier with ONLY a hashed_phone_number:
#
# my $incorrect_user_identifier = Google::Ads::GoogleAds::V16::Common::UserIdentifier->new({
#   hashedEmail => '...',

Review your uploads

Use offline data diagnostics to review the overall health of your recent uploads. Note that upload success does not necessarily mean the uploads have matches.

When reporting on conversion metrics for your campaigns, refer to Mapping user interface metrics to correlate Google Ads UI metrics with Google Ads API reporting fields. You can also query the conversion_action resource to view the total number of conversions and the total conversion value for a given conversion action.
