Integrate AppLovin with Mediation

Stay organized with collections Save and categorize content based on your preferences.

This guide shows you how to use the Google Mobile Ads SDK to load and display ads from AppLovin using mediation, covering both waterfall and bidding integrations. It covers how to add AppLovin to an ad unit's mediation configuration, and how to integrate the AppLovin SDK and adapter into an Android app.

Supported integrations and ad formats

The Ad Manager mediation adapter for AppLovin has the following capabilities:

Integration
Bidding
Waterfall
Formats
Banner  1
Interstitial
Rewarded
Native

Banner ads (excluding MREC banners) are supported only in mediation. Bidding does not support any type of banner ads.

Requirements

  • Android API level 19 or higher
  • [For bidding]: AppLovin adapter 9.4.2.0 or higher (latest version recommended)
  • Latest Google Mobile Ads SDK

Step 1: Set up AppLovin

Sign up or log in to your AppLovin account.

To set up your Ad Manager ad unit, you'll need your AppLovin SDK Key and Report Key. To find them, go to the AppLovin Dashboard and click on the Account tab. In the dropdown list under Account, select Keys to see both values.

If you plan on just integrating bidding, you can proceed to configure your mediation settings.

Select app for mediation

Bidding

This step isn't required for bidding integrations.

Waterfall

On the AppLovin dashboard, select Applications under the Monetization section to get to your registered apps. Select the app you'd like to use with mediation from the list of available apps.

Create a zone

Bidding

This step isn't required for bidding integrations.

Waterfall

On the AppLovin dashboard, select Zones under the Monetization section to get to your registered zone IDs. If you have already created the required zones for your app, skip ahead to Step 2. To create a new zone ID, click Create Zone.

Enter the name of Zone ID, select Android as the Platform, and choose the desired Ad Type.

Configure Pricing for the zone by selecting either Flat CPM or Optimized by AppLovin. CPMs can be configured on a per country basis for the Flat CPM option. Then, click Save.

Once the zone is created, the zone ID can be found under the Zone ID column.

Step 2: Configure mediation settings for your Ad Manager ad unit

Sign in to your Ad Manager account.

Add AppLovin in Companies

Navigate to Admin > Companies, then click the New company button in the All companies tab.

Bidding

Select AppLovin as the Ad network and enter a unique Name. Then, click Save.

Waterfall

Select AppLovin as the Ad network and enter a unique Name. Enable Mediation, turn on Automatic data collection, and enter the API Key obtained in the previous section. You don't need to enter a Username or Password. Click Save when done.

Enable secure signal sharing

Bidding

Navigate to Admin > Global settings. Go to the Processor features tab and review and accept the Ads Data Processing terms.

Under the Secure signal sharing settings section, accept the terms. Finally, click Save.

Waterfall

This step isn't required for waterfall integrations.

Configure AppLovin bidding

Bidding

Navigate to Delivery > Bidders, and click New bidder under the Open Bidding tab.

Select AppLovin as the bidder and the company you created for AppLovin.

Toggle on Add this bidder's signal library to the list of allowed signals and Allow signals to be shared with this bidder. Then, click Continue.

Click Acknowledge.

Click Done.

Waterfall

This step isn't required for waterfall integrations.

Configure ad unit mapping

Bidding

Navigate to Delivery > Bidders and select the company you created for AppLovin in the Open Bidding tab. Go to the Ad unit mapping tab, then click New ad unit mapping.

Fill out the form and enter the SDK Key obtained in the previous section. Click Save.

Go to the Yield groups tab, then click New yield group.

Enter a unique Name for your yield group, set the Status to Active, select your Ad Format, and set the Inventory type to Mobile App. Under the Targeting > Inventory section, select the desired ad unit.

Scroll down and click Add yield partner.

In the form, select the company you created for AppLovin as the Yield partner and Open Bidding as the Integration type. Update the Status to Active and click Save.

Waterfall

Navigate to Delivery > Yield groups and click the New yield group button.

Scroll down and click Add yield partner.

Select the AppLovin yield partner created in the previous section. Choose Mobile SDK mediation as the Integration type, Android as the Platform, and Active as the Status.

Enter the Application ID of your app along with the SDK Key and the Zone ID obtained in the previous section, and the Default CPM value. Click Save.

Rewarded ads

In the settings for your rewarded ad unit, provide values for the reward amount and reward type. Then, to ensure you provide the same reward to the user no matter which ad network is served, check the Override reward settings from third-party ad networks when using mediation box. If you don't apply this setting, the AppLovin adapter passes back the reward specified in the AppLovin dashboard when creating the placement.

Step 3: Import the AppLovin SDK and adapter

Add the following implementation dependency with the latest version of the AppLovin SDK and adapter in the app-level build.gradle file:

repositories {
    google()
    mavenCentral()
}

...
dependencies {
    implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-ads:21.3.0'
    implementation 'com.google.ads.mediation:applovin:11.5.5.0'
}
...

Manual integration

  • Download the AppLovin Android SDK, extract the applovin-sdk-x.y.z.jar, and add it to your project.

  • Navigate to the AppLovin adapter artifacts on Google's Maven Repository. Select the latest version, download the AppLovin adapter's .aar file, and add it to your project.

Step 4: Additional code required

No additional code required for AppLovin integration.

Step 5: Test your implementation

AppLovin recommends that test ads be used during development if you cannot get live ads.

To enable test ads, go to the Manage Apps page by clicking on your app's name in the AppLovin dashboard and navigate to the Test Mode section. Toggle the Test Mode switch to ON.

Test Mode might take up to 30 mins to take effect and automatically resets to OFF after two hours.

Optional steps

Under the Google EU User Consent Policy, you must ensure that certain disclosures are given to, and consents obtained from, users in the European Economic Area (EEA) regarding the use of device identifiers and personal data. This policy reflects the requirements of the EU ePrivacy Directive and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). When seeking consent, you must identify each ad network in your mediation chain that may collect, receive, or use personal data and provide information about each network's use. Google currently is unable to pass the user's consent choice to such networks automatically.

In SDK version 8.0.1 , AppLovin added the setHasUserContent and setIsAgeRestrictedUser methods.

The following sample code shows how to pass consent information to the AppLovin SDK. These options must be set before you initialize the Google Mobile Ads SDK to ensure they get forwarded properly to the AppLovin SDK.

Java

import com.applovin.sdk.AppLovinPrivacySettings;
// ...

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setHasUserConsent(true, context);

Kotlin

import com.applovin.sdk.AppLovinPrivacySettings
// ...

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setHasUserConsent(true, context)

Additionally, if the user is known to be in an age-restricted category, you can also set the below flag to true.

Java

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setIsAgeRestrictedUser(true, context);

Kotlin

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setIsAgeRestrictedUser(true, context)

See AppLovin's privacy settings for more information.

Add AppLovin Corp. to GDPR ad partners list

Follow the steps in GDPR settings to add AppLovin Corp. to the GDPR ad partners list in the Ad Manager UI.

CCPA

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) requires giving California state residents the right to opt out of the "sale" of their "personal information" (as the law defines those terms), with the opt-out offered via a prominent "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" link on the "selling" party's homepage. The CCPA preparation guide offers the ability to enable restricted data processing for Google ad serving, but Google is unable to apply this setting to each ad network in your mediation chain. Therefore, you must identify each ad network in your mediation chain that may participate in the sale of personal information and follow guidance from each of those networks to ensure compliance with CCPA.

The AppLovin SDK includes the setDoNotSell method to let publishers opt out of the sale of personal information.

The following sample code shows how to pass this consent information to the AppLovin SDK. These options must be set before you initialize the Google Mobile Ads SDK to ensure they get forwarded properly to the AppLovin SDK.

Java

import com.applovin.sdk.AppLovinPrivacySettings;
// ...

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setDoNotSell(true, context);

Kotlin

import com.applovin.sdk.AppLovinPrivacySettings
// ...

AppLovinPrivacySettings.setDoNotSell(true, context)

See AppLovin's Privacy documentation for more information.

Add AppLovin Corp. to CCPA ad partners list

Follow the steps in CCPA settings to add AppLovin Corp. to the CCPA ad partners list in the Ad Manager UI.

Network-specific parameters

The AppLovin adapter supports setMuteAudio() which can disable audio on video ads. This method can be called from an AppLovinExtras.Builder() object:

Java

Bundle extras = new AppLovinExtras.Builder()
   .setMuteAudio(true)
   .build();
AdManagerAdRequest request = new AdManagerAdRequest.Builder()
   .addNetworkExtrasBundle(ApplovinAdapter.class, extras)
   .build();

Kotlin

val extras = AppLovinExtras.Builder()
   .setMuteAudio(true)
   .build()
val request = AdManagerAdRequest.Builder()
   .addNetworkExtrasBundle(ApplovinAdapter::class.java, extras)
   .build()

Optimizations

Initializing the AppLovin SDK as soon as your app launches provides AppLovin the ability to track events as soon as the app starts.

Java

AppLovinSdk.getInstance("sdkKey", null, context).initializeSdk();

Kotlin

AppLovinSdk.getInstance("sdkKey", null, context).initializeSdk()

Error codes

If the adapter fails to receive an ad from AppLovin, publishers can check the underlying error from the ad response using ResponseInfo.getAdapterResponse() under the following classes: com.google.ads.mediation.applovin.ApplovinAdapter com.google.ads.mediation.applovin.AppLovinMediationAdapter

Here are the codes and accompanying messages thrown by the AppLovin adapter when an ad fails to load:
