Google Workspace offers a wide range of developer products and tools that let you connect your service with Google Workspace or extend Google Workspace apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat. Each Google Workspace app or integration has its own Google Cloud project where you configure APIs, set up authentication, and manage deployments.
In the Google Cloud console, the Google Workspace API Overview shows many common Google Workspace API tasks that you can complete elsewhere in the Google Cloud console. The Google Workspace APIs are gathered all in one place so that you can manage these APIs.
You can get started with Google Workspace development in two ways: follow the five setup steps to manually configure a Cloud project, or build web apps in Google AI Studio.
Get started in 5 steps
To manually set up a Cloud project for your development, complete these five steps:
Create a Google Cloud project for your Google Workspace app, extension, or integration.
Enable the APIs you want to use in your Google Cloud project.
Learn how authentication and authorization works when developing for Google Workspace.
Configure OAuth consent to ensure users can understand and approve what access your app has to their data.
Create access credentials to authenticate your app's end users or service accounts.
Build web apps in Google AI Studio
As an alternative to manually creating a Cloud project, you can use Google AI Studio to develop and deploy web apps with integrated Google Workspace APIs:
- Google-managed Starter Tier project: Eligible Google Accounts automatically receive a no-cost, Google-managed Starter Tier project governed by the Starter Tier Additional Terms of Service, with no need to manually create a Cloud project or configure credentials. Supported Google Workspace APIs and built-in Google Sign-In OAuth permissions are preconfigured.
- User-managed Cloud project: If your account is not eligible for Starter Tier, or if you upgrade from a Starter Tier project, you can create or use an existing user-managed Cloud project by following the steps to manually configure a Cloud project. You can still use Google AI Studio to help you get started with Google Workspace APIs when building apps. While other services in Google AI Studio might require a linked Cloud Billing account on a user-managed Cloud project, supported Google Workspace APIs do not require Cloud Billing.
