Pay-as-you-go

Google Maps Platform uses a pay-as-you-go pricing model, which means that each Google Maps Core Service price is determined on a cost per billable event for each service you use.

How pay-as-you-go works

Each Google Maps Platform product is linked to one or more stock-keeping units (SKU), which are charged based on billable events. While billable events vary across SKUs, they are all based on a charge for the data you receive from the service.

Billable events include the following:

  • Successful requests to an endpoint: Some SKUs are charged for every request to an endpoint. For example, requests for data layers through the Solar API are charged per request.
  • Successful requests for specific fields: In an API request, you can include a field mask, which provides a list of the fields you want the service to return. Fields may be charged at different rates, depending on the SKU and the data returned.
  • Successful map or data loads: For some SKUs, you are charged only if requested map or data successfully loads.

Each SKU has an associated price, listed as a cost per 1000 billable events, known as cost per mille or CPM. For information about product-specific billable events, see Usage details.

Pay-as-you-go pricing is separated into pricing tiers categorized by usage volume. To determine the applicable volume pricing tier, Google aggregates use for all projects linked to your billing account for the applicable month.

Additionally, pay-as-you-go pricing does not require up-front fees or termination charges. Service usage is calculated on a monthly basis.

Free usage caps and volume discounts

Google Maps Platform offers two kinds of price discounts:

  • Free usage caps: To help you identify, evaluate, and test our service, each SKU provides free billable events every month, the quantity of which depends on the price category the SKU belongs to. This free usage resets on the first day of each month, at midnight Pacific US time. For specific free usage caps, see the global price list and the India price list.
  • Volume discounts: All Google Maps Platform Core Services SKUs have usage-based volume discounts scaling to millions. These discounts happen automatically and require no special action on your part. As you expand your usage, you are automatically billed for usage that falls into each price tier.
