In the Display & Video 360 API, you can set resource targeting with assigned targeting options. These are applied to resources in two ways:
- Assigned directly to a resource.
- Inherited from a parent.
In most cases, inherited targeting is included in a resource's assigned targeting. Inherited targeting can't be updated. You must update targeting for the resource to which it is assigned. This enforces brand safety settings on served ads.
Here's how inheritance works for different resources:

This breaks down targeting and inheritance by resource type:
- Partners support some targeting types. They have no parents. They don't inherit any targeting. You can read and write partner targeting using the API.
- Advertisers support some targeting types. They inherit targeting from their partner. You can read and write advertiser targeting using the API. YouTube & Partners targeting types can't be updated using the API.
- Line Items support most targeting types. They inherit targeting from their partner and advertiser. You can read and write line item targeting using the API. Targeting for YouTube & Partners line items can't be updated using the API.
- Ad Groups support some targeting types. They inherit targeting from their partner, advertiser, and line item, but it isn't seen in the assigned targeting. You can read ad group targeting using the API.
